The costumes of the original production often look so much better, because the original actor is the inspiration for the character.

I have been looking at the original production of Chorus Line for characters that are performers and that look so particular and so natural. I guessed that the costume designer looked at what the actors wore to their audition for Chorus Line in 1975…but I didn’t know that these characters were actually based on the original actors.

I bet this actor often wore a blue bandana tied around his neck, and then the costume designer traded it for a dark red one when she lined him up next to the red dress and the red shirt.

Wonderful! and Darn! Theoni Aldredge still did an awesome job…that is not really cheating…but, to design clothing that looks just right on an actor that is also just right for the character will take a few more steps now that we can’t pull directly from their closets!

These three are also from the original cast in 1975. Black and White makes it look like everyone is wearing black or a flesh tone. Especially that taupe leotard!
