In my ideal world, high schools get to produce a play within a decade of it’s conception. That would mean that a play could not sit on Broadway too long. Fat Ham is a pandemic baby that had a 15 week Broadway run (including previews). Perfect.

  1. A Workshop in a Regional Theater or Residency at a College

  2. A second workshop at a New Play Development Program at a well-funded theater, often the one “commissioning” the work

  3. A first production at the regional or off-Broadway theater

  4. A year of rewrites and then a transfer to a Broadway theater

  5. A year of productions at the big regional theaters around the country after the Broadway run closes

  6. A year of productions at smaller theaters and university departments

  7. A decade of productions at high school theaters
