There is a ruler in the center front of that corset. I know, because I saw a variety of corsets like this one in person in a few costume collections at museums.
If you want to try it yourself, all you need is a ruler and a pain tolerance. I have an 18” wooden ruler that says New York City Department of Education. Blessedly, it does not have a metal edge. But! it wounds nonetheless.
