Every era and every person seems to have a preference for where we put our moveable flesh.

I have a genuine love for all the bodies and all the shapes. Having preferences is a professional hazard in costume design.

There is a ruler in the center front of that corset. I know, because I saw a variety of corsets like this one in person in a few costume collections at museums.

If you want to try it yourself, all you need is a ruler and a pain tolerance. I have an 18” wooden ruler that says New York City Department of Education. Blessedly, it does not have a metal edge. But! it wounds nonetheless. I am like the vast majority of the human race - I have to move some meat out of the way to get that ruler to sit close-ish to my sternum, and find a posture and some abdominal muscles I don’t ofte…
