Joelle looked like J.Lo.
That’s how she walked into the salon every day. Purposefully a little frizzy. Medium-huge volume. Same glasses. Same rings. Same jeans with jewels. Add freckles, but otherwise, all the same.
Joelle booked clients 2 years in advance.
She worked Wednesday to Sunday, 9am to 7pm, shorter hours on the weekends so about 40 hours/week. She took some weekends off to go to the Jersey shore or a friend’s wedding. She went on a few vacations, actually just friends’ weddings out-of-state - but usually she was in the salon all of those hours, every week, working the whole time.
She was just a cutter. Joelle would take about 30 minutes to cut the hair, and then she and an assistant would blow dry the hair together. So, 1 client per hour.
40 clients/week; 50 weeks/year = 2,000 cuts at $100 each. $200,000/year in 2000? that’s as good as it gets.
She was so valuable that the owner let her keep 100% of her fees. She just had to pass all of the tips to the assistants, shampooists …
