To understand what a one-bedroom flat on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in 1975 and its surrounding environment is like, let’s look at what it is not.
Each of this week’s photos is from a larger story about a not-NYC place in the 1970’s. They are from Magnum photographers, and you can see their work on pro.Magnum if you sign up for a free professional account.
When looking at these I basically say to myself,
That looks like 1970’s in that place; and then I let these images color in the margins, so that when I look at New York City research, the little and large ideas that make it so NYC really stand out.
Then I ask,
What confirms my back-of-the-brain ideas about the 1970’s? What is new and news to me? I note the patterns that say 1975ish in several places for use in the design.
