Some of us clever costumers may think, “I’ll just buy a real vintage dress and replace the zipper.”


I chose dresses with ruching for these essays because they really bulk up a seam. They add awesome dimension and create the problem that vintage dealer tried to hide with a digital sharpie…
So, just take the zipper out and put in an invisible one.
Theater wisdom tells us not to do that. But I needed to learn it for reals to really commit the ‘no invisible zippers!’ (said like, ‘no wire hangers!’) edict to memory.
How do you think the back of this dress I made closed? Invisible zipper, of course! These two were supposed to look like they were attending the Oscars - no homemade lapped zippers for her.
