I hear schools always have the performers in mind when they choose a show.
Theaters sometimes do. Often directors have a lead that they want, or they will even pitch a show because they think it would be a great fit for a certain performer.
Even then, often someone else ends up getting cast.
I worked on a production of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew that was built for one actor as Kate. and that fell through. So, we had a different Kate, who was a different kind of great.
This pair of photos had a vibe we all agreed on:


It seemed to us that this person in the childish t-shirt and hair-do is approaching what most societies consider the mate-choice years with ambivalence, and maybe anger. There is still some ‘love me’ messages being sent, even if the posture and the clothing are not sending universal ‘marry me’ messages.
The director and actor agreed. This photo was our touchstone for where Kate started.
