When the Ashcan School = the AssCan School. I think these are the paintings that the author was imagining was on the wall of the apartment in the show.

“A bad play with many butts on the wall.”

Checking Out was the first play assigned in set design class in graduate school. That was how one student characterized it. “Bad” or not. I like it, now. I didn’t know I was allowed to not like a play, or call it bad then. Looking back, remember the ‘yuck’ feelings I got while reading it. I guess I didn’t like it.

Reading Checking Out now, I am surprised at how comfortable I am with all of the talk of the big butt displayed over and over again in the art on the wall. Maybe because Beyonce is always a mom and most often next to naked. I don’t see any conflict in her face…ever…at all…about anything. Beyonce is always right. Big bare butt and being a mom can coexist happily.
