Better voices than Broadway.
I think so. The Moonbox Theater’s production of Sweeney Todd sounded better than the current Broadway production. I listened to the Broadway cast recording yesterday to confirm my suspicions. Yep. Even with imperfect sound design, it was obvious - every note of that show was good as it gets.
Is there such a thing as a better voice? I have never been an expert on singing. But! I am a little bit more of an expert now that I saw that production. All of those notes were perfect and new to me. Every time those performers opened their mouths something special came out. The ‘oh wow’ kind of clear notes. And it was all so precise, so little sliding into notes.
I have seen a bunch of musicals on Broadway, many many operas at the Met. Amateur opera singer concerts, and regional professional musicals. That performance of Sweeney Todd last week was the most beautifully sung music I have sat through.
