“When you introduce music, it is like bringing another actor on stage.”

So say Anne Bogart and Tina Landau to open the Working With Music chapter in their book on directing, The Viewpoints Book. Viewpoints started as “a way to structure a dance in time and space” named by Mary Overlie (space, shape, time, emotion, movement and story). Ms. Bogart studied with Ms. Overlie and orchestrated the transfer of this framework to theater.

If you have seen a production on this continent that you found particularly physically exciting - The Viewpoints Book or Viewpoints training probably had a hand in that.

When you get good at these methods rehearsal rooms are thrilling, generative places that use everyone’s best abilities, and a supportive ensemble is built efficiently - teachers have told me these are 2 necessities for an awesome, inclusive and democratic drama program.
